Foaming Hand Soap – DIY

You can make your own Foaming Hand Soap, and it’s very simple. You will need a special kind of dispenser that pushes a bit of air in with the soap and water to create the foamy consistency. If you don’t use a foaming dispenser, you’ll still have soap, it just won’t be foamy.
If you’ve purchased foaming hand soap previously, you can simply REFILL your old container. No need to purchase a new one.

Why make my own soap?

If we could steer away from using soaps that harm algae, plants, and our groundwater that would benefit the whole world. Besides a lot of the soaps have ‘fragrance’ in them. What is fragrance? Unfortunately that isn’t regulated in our country. For me it means: hormone disrupters, synthetics, and creepy shit. Personally, I steer clear when I see that ‘ingredient’ listed on products.

Castile soap is the BEST! This is what we use camping, what we use at our yurt to wash dishes and bodies, and it is the base for the laundry soap we use at our house. It is environmentally safe and effective and especially important when our grey water will not be going through a filtration system. We should ALL be using castile soap, honestly. It is safer for our bodies and the environment.

Shouldn’t we use anti-bacterial hand soap? According to the FDA anti-bacterial soap isn’t more effective at killing germs than regular soap and water. Besides, anti-bacterial soap kills some good bacteria. Overuse could lead to the creation of anti-biotic resistance germs.

What do I need?

The only thing you’ll have to buy is Castile Soap. We have this in bulk at our local grocery store, so I can go refill my jug when it runs dry. This is the best option for me, reusing my container instead of buying a new one. You’ll also need water. Distilled is best if you aren’t whipping through your hand soap. If you’re like us, we refill frequently, so tap water works just fine. And, finally, this isn’t a requirement, but you can use an essential oil you love. Maybe you have a favorite scent? Use that one, and you’ll only need a drop or two. Make sure you’re using oils that you feel good about – safe and pure.

How To:

Fill your container 1/4 of the way with castile soap. Next, fill your container the remaining 3/4 of the way with water. Optional: drop in 1-2 drops of your favorite essential oil.

Shake your container a bit to stir your mixture and pump into your hand. Wash and rinse.

If you have a big container (glass is probably best if you’re using essential oils) to store a pre-mix of foaming soap, go for it. This makes the refill process even easier. Remember, a simple 1:3 ratio is best for your foaming hand soap mixture.
