Herbal Postpartum Sitz Bath Recipe

One of the simplest and most comforting herbal practices during postpartum recovery is a sitz bath. A sitz bath is simply an herbal infusion used to bathe the perineal area. It can help soothe tenderness, support tissue recovery, and bring a little relief during a time when the body is doing a lot of healing work.

If you plan to sit directly in the bath, adding oats can make the water extra soothing for the skin. However, if this is a recipe you plan to use postpartum, putting some of this tea in a squeeze bottle is probably best. Soaking postpartum isn’t typically great for healing. Check with your provider to find out which method is best for you.

How to Prepare the Sitz Bath

Place the herbs in a bowl, jar, or muslin bag.

Pour boiling water over the herbs, making sure they are fully covered. Allow the mixture to steep for at least two hours as the water cools.

Once steeped, strain the herbs and add the infusion to a warm bath or sitz bath basin.

You can also simmer the herbs gently, strain the liquid, and freeze the infusion into cubes. These can later be thawed and used in a peri bottle for gentle rinsing.

This herbal infusion is especially comforting during postpartum recovery, when tissues are tender and healing. Many people also find it soothing for hemorrhoids or general irritation.
